Legacy Fund - "Pay It Forward" Project
The Southland Education Foundation voted to establish a Legacy Fund at their regular quarterly meeting held on December 5, 2016, at the Southland High School Media Center. The fund was established after a supporter of the foundation donated a special gift to this year's senior class.
The donor’s gift was presented to the senior class at the Legacy Dinner, which was held in November of 2017, to recognize the efforts of the current senior class. All alumni and community members were invited to attend the dinner to celebrate the senior class as well as listen to short presentations from alumni on what their Southland education has meant to them. During the presentation, a letter from the donor was read, asking the seniors to “Make the decision each day about how you are going to treat others and make your space in the world better.” The letter went on to say, “There will come a time that you find you have a little extra. A little extra time. A little extra heart. A little extra compassion. A little extra change in your pocket. When that time comes, we urge that you ask yourself how you can use your ‘little extra’ to change another’s ‘not quite enough’.”
Others soon joined in the support of the fund and $1100 was raised by the Foundation for this year’s senior class to “Pay It Forward.” The seniors are working with Principal Scott Hall and the teachers regarding something special they can provide to benefit academic programs in the school.
Our Southland community has thrived over the years due to the spirit of giving back by so many people committed to our churches, schools, and communities. They recognized that it improved the quality of life for themselves, their family, and their friends. The Foundation wants to instill the same spirit in this year’s senior class and also in future senior classes.
